ABOUT THE VINE The expression Malvasia derives from the name of the Greek city of "Monemvasia", degenerated into "Malfasia" and then Italianized into "Malvasia". Thanks to the Venetians, in the 16th/17th century, it spread throughout the Mediterranean area where, following crossbreeding with local vines, it gave birth to various vines with the name Malvasia (Istriana, del Lazio, di Bosa, delle Lipari and others). Many of these produced wines that were different from the originals and in this regard the ampelographer Di Rovasenda (1824-1913), wrote " [...] Malvasie should only be called those fragrant grapes that have the special slightly bitter taste of Moscato. However, they are there are too many simple-flavoured grapes called Malvasia […] a name they bear unduly".
