Introduced in 2001, Port Ellen's Diageo Special Release series revived the distillery's bottlings, which had until then been limited to those from the Rare Malt Selection range. This annual meeting saw the barrels of two flagship vintages, 1978 and 1979 (with some exceptions: the 1983 of the 15th Release), with the implicit rule: the 1978 vintage being bottled in "even years" (with the exception of the 2013, 13th Release ), and the 1979 vintage in the “odd year” bottling (with the exception of 2012, 12th edition). The last bottling was 2017. This fifth edition is limited to 5,280 bottles.
