Description

Denomination DOCG Grape variety 100% Sangiovese Altitude Average altitude of 300 meters slm Soil The Brunello di Montalcino "Canalicchio di Sopra" vintage is the result of a blend of two different soils: Soil with a marked clayey component, very rich in intermediate elements such as magnesium, Iron and manganese characteristic of Cru Canalicchio and a marly soil placed in an elevated position with a very high mineral component, clayey texture with a high presence of silt, characteristic of Cru Montosoli. The blend favors wines of great minerality and sapidity, supported by excellent acidity, ideal for long aging. Training system Spurred cordon. Vineyards For this wine, grapes from the two company crus were used (Canalicchio 40% and Montosli 60%): the decision to increase Montosoli compared to our traditional 50% and 50% derives from the greater concentration that the grapes have reached in this area. All the vineyards are more than 10 years old. Vinification In steel tanks with fermentation temperature control, daily soft pumping over. Maceration on the skins for 25 days. Aging 36 months in Slavonian oak barrels of 25 and 50 hl First year of production 1966 Alcohol content 14.50% Climate of the year 2013 is one of the recent years where the climatic trend has been constant, recalling in some respects vintages typical of the 90s. Fair and regular rains and winter temperatures in line with the season have allowed the vegetative development of the plant in perfect times and in line with the season, creating the starting conditions for a traditional harvest at the end of September. The summer months were characterized by cool temperatures, without high temperature peaks, and above all by accentuated temperature ranges which favored important polyphenolic maturations while safeguarding acidity, an important requirement for a long aging wine. September started with some rains which however did not compromise the quality of the grapes in the slightest, but only slightly postponed the harvest period. A late harvest compared to the times we are used to in recent years certainly has the advantage of bringing fresh grapes to the cellar and capable of maintaining the fragrance of the tannins and harmonizing the aromatic component towards the floral part of our vine. Patience and the right amount of risk that a producer of quality wines has a duty to take every year led to the harvest which began on 27th September from the youngest vineyards, and ended on 8th October, just before the rainy season began which then it was abundant. In Canalicchio di Sopra we remember with great pleasure two harvest mornings in which in Montosoli the temperature was 6°C, for us an indelible sign of the characteristics of this vintage. For all these climatic aspects, 2013 is a vintage that can be inserted among the fresh vintages capable of enhancing the peculiarities of the land and the dexterity of man. Producer's notes Introduction: Talking about the 2013 vintage in Montalcino is for us a great return to classicism, understood as the ability of a wine to express the essence of the territory from which it comes. There are vintages that the producer in the cellar falls in love with because he captures their extraordinary elegance and imagines them already projected into the future, like bottles capable of remaining engraved in the history of his company. The concept of a classic vintage: For us, classicism means elegance, depth and sensuality, concepts dear to our production philosophy and which we ask in a demanding way from the Cru Canalicchio and Montosoli where our vineyards in Montalcino are located. Classic vintage for us means wines with great freshness, where depth matters more than opulence and where sapidity tells of a balanced climate. Terroir means soil, climate and man, and in classical times these three components come together in a great balance without one prevailing over the other. Brunello di Montalcino Docg 2013 “Canalicchio di Sopra” – THE RETURN OF CLASSICITY The Brunello di Montalcino Docg 2013 “Canalicchio di Sopra” is the result of the climatic characteristics of the vintage, characteristics that due to their climatic constancy and the low seasonal averages to fully enhance the land and the slopes where the grapes grow. A wine that in our opinion combines elegance, depth, minerality and sapidity. For this wine, grapes from the two company crus were used (Canalicchio 40% and Montosli 60%): the decision to increase Montosoli compared to our traditional 50% and 50% derives from the greater concentration that the grapes have reached in this area. balance that we have sought in wine, a concept always dear to Canalicchio di Sopra, is based on a coherence between nose and mouth based on freshness and florality. The important acidity, present and characterizing, is integrated into what is a silky and long tannic texture. As a demonstration of the reputation we have for the 2013 vintage, we have selected, as we only do in great vintages, the grapes from our Montosoli Cru to produce the Brunello di Montalcino Docg 2013 Riserva "Canalicchio di Sopra": it will be the thirteenth Riserva produced by our company in more than 50 vintages and will be released on the market in February 2019 in a very limited edition of only 3,666 bottles
