Its cult dates back to the prehistory of Roman, Greek and Celtic civilisations. It was such a favourite tree of the gods and men that keeping a chip of this wood was thought to preserve them from misfortune. This belief goes all the way back to our recent past, when in Abruzzo people used to gather oak leaves on which lightning had fallen to entrust to poor recruits leaving for war. It was thought that thanks to this talisman, soldiers could not be hit by bullets, and this was based on the belief that where lightning had fallen once, it would never fall again.
