Biferno DOC - The distinctive wines of Molise

Biferno is a small but prestigious denomination from central Italy named after the river that runs through the region of Molise. On this page you’ll discover everything you need to know about Biferno DOC wines: characteristics, grape varieties used, production areas, and labels you absolutely must try.

Biferno wines come from an unspoiled territory with a long winemaking tradition. They have a strong character and are perfect for pairing with the genuine flavors of Molise’s cuisine.

Characteristics and history of Biferno DOC

The Biferno DOC was established in 2001 to promote and enhance the quality wine production of Molise. It includes red, rosé, white and sparkling wines produced in the area between the Biferno and Fortore rivers.

Biferno wines stand out for their rustic, authentic character with aromas and flavors that recall their terroir. They are ideal wines to pair with typical Molise dishes.

Grape varieties used for Biferno DOC wines

The main authorized grape varieties for Biferno wines are:

- Montepulciano: black grape that makes full-bodied, aromatic reds. The principal variety in Biferno Rosso.

- Aglianico: another red variety that lends acidity and structure. Used above all in blends.

- Trebbiano: white grape that gives freshness to Biferno Bianco.

- Bombino Bianco: aromatic grape blended in Biferno Bianco with Trebbiano.

- Malvasia Bianca: confers citrus and floral notes.

Types of Biferno DOC wine

The Biferno DOC includes the following wine styles:

- Biferno Rosso: made with at least 85% Montepulciano, an intense ruby red, full-bodied wine with fruity aromas and spicy notes. Best served at 18°C (64°F).

- Biferno Rosato: made with at least 50% Montepulciano, it has a lovely bright pink color. On the nose it recalls red berries. Best served chilled at 10-12°C (50-54°F).

- Biferno Bianco: a blend of Trebbiano and Bombino Bianco with a straw yellow color and floral, fruity aromas. Excellent as an aperitif at 8-10°C (46-50°F).

- Biferno Spumante: produced in both sweet and brut styles from Biferno Bianco grapes.
