The Winery
The winery Mazzarosa Devincenzi was founded at the time of the creation of the Kingdom of Italy by Senator Giuseppe Devincenzi. Born in 1814 in Notaresco (TE), he dedicated his life to politics: he held numerous posts first in the parliament of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies and later in the Kingdom of Italy, was appointed senator from 1861 to 1868, and played a very important role in the post-unification regional rebirth.
The Estates
The farm and wine estate covers 540 hectares, 37 of which are planted with vines: this is where the grapes come from the three typical Abruzzo grape varieties, Montepulciano, Trebbiano and Pecorino, and international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon.
Senator Giuseppe Devincenzi
The winery Mazzarosa Devincenzi was founded at the time of the creation of the Kingdom of Italy by Senator Giuseppe Devincenzi. Born in 1814 in Notaresco (TE), he dedicated his life to politics: he held numerous posts first in the parliament of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies and later in the Kingdom of Italy, was appointed senator from 1861 to 1868, and played a very important role in the post-unification regional rebirth.
He introduced many innovations in Abruzzo, succeeding in importing unknown grape varieties such as Malbec and Pinot, and endowed his properties with splendid vineyards. Once his public duties were over, he dedicated himself to his company and established an important wine-making establishment in the then municipality of Montepagano (now Roseto).
Winery
Like the Tuscan moderates, he combined his concern for agriculture with his interest in the construction of railways that were to serve to create a national communication network; he had many relations with foreign countries, especially England and France, where he took inspiration for the construction of his wine cellar.
): An innovator and visionary, he designed a wine cellar that was unique for its architecture and for the system of lifting and transporting grapes on rails. The 1000 hl barrel (which had the function of cutting the wine) and the counterweight lift, to ease and speed up the work of the farmers, make it a contributing example. Also unique are the temperature and humidity control system, provided by the walls and buildings surrounding the heart of the cellar and the clay 'floor'.
The wine cellar represents one of the oldest structures in the region, designed and built in the second half of the 19th century by Senator Giuseppe Devincenzi, and is therefore a historical and cultural reference for the entire region.
Family
Senator Devincenzi died in 1903 without children, so he bequeathed the winery and the cellar to his niece Maria Maddalena Devincenzi, who was able to maintain the prestige of the winery and continued the path started by her uncle with determination and courage.
Maria Maddalena married Marquis Antonio Mazzarosa, originally from Lucca and also from a family with an agricultural tradition, and from then on the winery acquired the double name by which it is known today.
In the last century, it was run by the three co-owner sons but was inherited by their grandson Pietro, father of the current owner Antonio Mazzarosa, who, together with his three children Maria Teresa, Lucrezia and Giuseppe, continues the tradition, planning new products and the expansion and restoration of the visitable part.
The winery today
Today, the winery continues to live on with all its architectural and structural features, and winemaking continues after a process of modernisation and mechanisation that has not changed the layout of the cellar.
Senator Devincenzi's project was continued and expanded by his descendants, from generation to generation until today: still owned by the family Mazzarosa Devincenzi, the winery continues to produce wines that, thanks to the Senator's attachment to tradition, are still distinguished by their naturalness and genuineness.
